Episode Three (The Evidence)

The noise was easily echoed all over the entire hostel and that was as a result of the power outage that faithful morning. In the matter of minutes, people were already outside to see what happened to the person that screamed. The occupants of the ground floor were the first to arrive at the scene and to their almost amazement it was the body of Alex laying lifeless on the floor surrounded by broken bottles and a stench of alcohol around him. On seeing this horrific sight there was uproar all over the hostel as the sun began to rise gradually to give light to this dark scene. Some of the student who lived on the upper floors just stood there in shock and were too horrified to come down. 

“Please where is his roommate? Is he upstairs?” one of the students asked.

“We will go and check, I don’t think he is awake yet. Most people at the top floor aren’t here” responded another student.

The utility worker was then asked if she saw anything unusual before she discovered the body to which she responded no and she explained how she discovered the body. 

Some of the students went upstairs to get Frank to come downstairs with them and when he saw the body from a little distance away he screamed “Alexander! Jesus!”;he began to shiver and was about to run to where the body was but was restrained by some of the students who felt it was better that no one made any physical contact with the body.

“What if he is still alive? He might be unconscious or something” said frank already in tears and shaking all over.

“Franko, he is gone bruh. Apparently, he dropped from the top floor or something. He might have jumped or mistakenly fallen, we can’t be sure. Let’s just call the police and alert whoever this might concern” said one of the students who tried to calm things down. 

Ladies were already in tears while some of guys who knew him well just didn’t know exactly how to react. They tried to keep the situation in control while they made contact with necessary parties who should be contacted.

Kike wasn’t yet fully awake; last night was such a special night and she had to go to bed late after Alex saw her off to her room and they both parted with a kiss. She could hear noise outside but she felt probably they found another writing on the wall, she thought in her mind what did they write this time again ehn? Just as she was about to get up and peep through the window, she heard a hard rapid knock on her door.

 “Who is it?” she asked shocked and a little scared.

The voice responded “it is me Kemi. Babe, open up now now! There is wahala oo”

From the tone of the voice she heard, she knew something was terribly wrong. Frightened and nervous, she dragged herself to the door and opened up quickly. 

“Babe, what is wrong? Did anything happen? Why is there so much noise?” she said, already developing a cold sweat because the look Kemi wore was screaming the world has ended!

“Kike, its Alexander” 

“My Alex, what happened to him?” she paused, expecting a response but just before she could get a verbal one she read the tears dripping out of Kemi’s eyes.

“Is he...” she broke down on her knees and went mute for some seconds and she tried to mutter some words but none came out. Kemi knelt by her and held her. Both in tears, Kike asked quietly

“Where is he? I want to see him. I don’t believe it” she said those words with her lips but deep in her gut, she knew that it was totally true. So Kemi helped her to get up and both of them walked to the spot where the crowd gathered.

At the scene, it was more intense as the sun had risen fully now and people outside the hostel had already began to troop into the hostel to see what had happened. The students had covered his face with a garment and were awaiting the police to arrive and do their job. 

People were saying among themselves. “Why will he kill himself ehn?”

Others were saying; he must have been very drunk and dropped from the top floor. Can’t you see the blood; it seems he bled from the head. But why didn’t anyone hear the fall -they wondered

Kike got to the scene and on seeing his body, she recognized the cloth he was wearing from the previous night, seeing this, she began to wail. Mike quickly ran to meet her and tried to calm her down. There were whispers amongst the crowd because they were wondering if she was his girlfriend due to the way she reacted. All she was whispering was, “he was just here last night...” she kept saying that while Mike held on to her and patted her.

In few minutes the police got to the scene and there was an ambulance also available to carry the corpse. The team was led by detective John who had just visited the hostel some days ago. On getting there along with his partner, Maya, and some forensic experts, they cleared the crowd and surrounded the whole scene with police tapes and told the students to back off. One of the students who approached the detective in a more respectable manner than Hon James, asked why they needed all this, giving the fact that the students concluded that it was either an accident or suicide. The detective told him that they were just following the normal procedure and he told him to help them calm his colleagues

Soon some representatives from the University also arrived at the scene and the police took all necessary statements and got all they needed and the body was moved from the hostel. The university representatives were to contact his parent as regards the tragic incident.

Kike was in her room all day, Kemi and Mike tried to keep her company so she wouldn’t do something nasty. Apparently, she was in love with Alex more than she knew it. She was feeling all kinds of emotions at that moment; Fear, sadness, pains; both emotional and in her body. She had cried her eyes out and the comfort of her friends here didn’t help much.

She asked Kike “what about Frank, he should be upstairs right”

“Yes, some of the guys upstairs are there with him, he will be fine” 

Kike continued to cry after getting that response from Kemi and Mike was there to calm her down.

“Please you need to stop crying, you will hurt yourself and I wouldn’t want that to happen to you dear”

She responded “ you can’t understand Mike, it wasn’t supposed to be this way, you don’t know how much I want last  night to replay itself” Mike knew they were together last night but he didn’t want to ask a grieving lady what she meant by that statement.

            At about 8pm the previous night, Alex and Kike left the hostel. He promised her that he had a surprise for her and that he was going to take her to somewhere special in town during the day when they chatted on whatsApp. He told her that he had become so fond of her over the past few weeks. Seeing the way Kike understood him when he pulled off that naughty scandal against Bimpe, made him realise what true love really meant. He further said he saw the pureness in her heart and that he always wanted to have this with him all the days of his life. She blushed all afternoon while in her room, chatting with him. She had forgotten to take off the dress she wore to church due to all the pleasant words he was saying to her while they chatted. 

That evening, she wore her best gown and wore a lovely perfume. She was looking elegant. It was going to be a big night and was anticipating it.  

At the restaurant they talked and held hands; he didn’t stop looking into her eyes all night. He told her how sexy she was and how lovely her lips were. He appreciated every detail about her that she hadn’t even noticed in herself. It was such a romantic experience for her and that night, in a rather embarrassing but beautiful show; he went down on one knee and asked her to make him the happiest guy in the world by officially becoming his girl. Her answer was the obvious, a big YES. Memories she would ever cherish in her heart. Now she had a thousand questions in her head that she didn’t know what any of the answers were.

Mike left the room later in the night when he saw that she was a little bit calm. He told her that he was going to check on her first thing in the morning then he left the room to retire to his own room.

Kemi was with her till it was dark, she prepared rice with stew but she didn’t want to eat it

“Kike, you have to eat oo, you haven’t eaten since morning”

“I don’t have any appetite, please you can eat, I will pass”

“No, I won’t let you do this to yourself, you must eat”

After much persuasion she yielded and she took few spoons which Kemi felt was still better. After about an hour of silence Kike asked;

“What do you think could have happened? He wasn’t drunk; I don’t know where the broken bottles came from, Mike was alright. He was in his right frame of mind” 

“Babe, I don’t understand the whole thing myself, it looks suspicious. Some said it looks like a suicide. But why will he kill himself?”

“Suicide? Kemi, he asked me out last night and I gave him a Yes; he was so excited, it couldn’t have been that. Never!”

Kemi was amazed, she now understood why her friend was reacting this much. It wasn’t just a friend that she lost but her lover. Kike told her about the previous night and she wore a little smile on her face before both of them fell asleep. She didn’t have the answers to her questions but she was sure there were answers and she was about to get some answers.

The following morning there was a knock on the door; it was quite loud so both ladies woke up immediately.

“Who is it” asked Kemi

“It is police, open up now!”

They both looked at each other in the eyes and Kemi reluctantly got up, walked to the door and opened it. It was Detective John. He asked; “are you Miss Kikelomo Adebayo”

“No, there she is” pointing at Kike who was already on her feet wondering why the police were asking after her. She walked to the door and said “Yes I am Kikelomo, what can I do for you Sir”

“We got a lead from the crime committed in this hostel yesterday, and your name came up, so we will need your attention at the office”

 Shocked and a little scared she responded “What!”
