DaHub Episode Four

Episode 4 (The Statements)

Still in shock, she asked “how can that be? I can’t hurt Alex for any reason”.

“Miss, just follow us to the station for some questioning that’s all, we are not arresting you. It’s just part of the investigation we are carrying out”

“Alright let me get dressed and I will be out in a jiffy”

“Okay, you have 5mins please”

Kike entered the room and tried to find something to wear. Still in a state of confusion, she just picked up her tooth brush and went into the bath room to brush her teeth. In less than a minute, she was out and she changed into a gown and put on a scarf to cover her rough hair. All along, Kemi was standing still next to the open door while the two gentlemen from the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) stood outside waiting for her. When she was done she grabbed her purse and was about to leave, on getting to the door, Kemi tapped her, “Babe, you are wearing a bathroom slipper”.

“Oh! I didn’t even notice it”

she went back and wore normal slippers then she headed back to the door. Just before she made her exit, Kemi hugged her and whispered to her ear “will you be alright or should I come along?”

“I’m good, you stay. I am sure it’s not something big”

“Alright dearie, I will be praying for you owk? It’s well”

“Can we go now?” said the impatient detective John, checking the time on his wristwatch.
She gave him a side glance and said “sure, I’m set” and then, she followed them.

As they walked through the hostel to the gate, people were staring and they didn’t understand what was going on but she told the few that came to ask her about what was going that all was well and there was no cause for alarm.

Kemi as a good Christian lady, who at various times had been a good influence on Kike, had tried to make her more serious with her Christian faith. Although, Kike was a believer too and she had some level of moral standards, she usually let her emotions get the best of her. Her association with Alex was going to be the reason she would be caught up in this drama that was about to unfold and Kemi somehow knew that some things might begin to go wrong in a couple of days. So as she had promised her friend who rarely listened to advice, she would go into her secret place and bow her knees to God for Kike’s vindication in this messy situation she just got herself into.

On getting to the station, she was put in a holding room for some minutes and after about ten minutes; Detective john came into the room and sat on a chair facing her and a table right in between them. There was only a bright light that shone on the table, the rest of the room was dark but both of them could see each other due to the light reflecting from the table on their faces.

He looked her straight in the eyes “Miss Kikelomo, what is your relationship with the deceased, Alexander Peters?”

“Alex is, oh sorry was my friend, a very good friend and I will never hurt him...”

“Please, only answer the questions I ask you. Okay?” he interrupted.

 “Yes sir”

“Good. So tell me, when last did you see him before his demise?”

“The previous night, we went out together”

“Okay and what was the aim of this outing?”

“He took me out on a date”

“A date?  Interesting, so what happened after this date? Anything worthy of note”

“Nothing special, when we got back into the hostel, he went back to his room. I didn’t follow him”
“And this was about what time?”
“I think some minutes before 12am”
“12am, that was rather late, isn’t 11:30pm the curfew? While stay out that late?”
“Alex has a car or rather had a car so he always knew how to get his way”
“Young lady, you were the last person to be with the deceased, his roommate claimed he never entered the room that night and from the evidences in the hostel, he dropped from the front of his room. There was a scratch from the railing, blood on the spot he dropped from and his finger prints were there”

“OMG!” she exclaimed.

“Miss Kikelomo, do you know why you are here?” she responded “No!”

“You were the last to see the deceased and we got that from his phone records and your whatsApp chat that afternoon. The gateman testified to the fact that he saw you in his car around 12am when he got back too, and most especially, your finger prints were all over his body and his clothes. That’s how we knew where to come to first” he paused and looked at her with a stern look and said “it’s either you know something about the murder or you have useful information that will help use, either way, you need to start talking now”

“Sir I have told you what I know, and by the way, it could have been an accident, not a murder”

“Miss, Alex was murdered, the autopsy proves it. The pathologist’s observation shows that he was hit in the head by a hard substance and from the height he fell from, it should have broken his skull if the hit was as a result of the fall but he only had a broken right femur and his spinal cord was affected. He had a Spinal shock for some hours so he couldn’t move. He was stabbed and as a result of the inability to move, he bled out.”

Kike was dumfounded and she just sat there and couldn’t control the tears flowing from her eyes. Her thoughts were running wild like a wild fire and she just kept wondering who could have wanted him dead.

The detective continued “Miss Kikelomo, Alex died a very traumatic death and if you truly care about him, you should cooperate with us. The media are already developing interests in this case and a lot are at stake, if we discover that you are withholding any delicate information from us. You could be charged with accessory to murder and that’s not good for a lady on a 4.34 CGPA, trust me, we have your records. You have a bright future ahead of you, don’t mess it up”

The detective was trying to get into her head and that wasn’t new about him. Detective John was famous in the CID for his idiosyncratic approach to investigations and interrogation. A well decorated detective who backed a degree in Psychology from the renowned University of South Wales and came back home to practice as a detective for the love of his country. He was primarily interested in investigating murder crimes and his expertise was second to none. He was the lead agent on the case and wouldn’t relent until he got to the bottom of the case.

Kike told him all that she could remember about that night and when she was asked about the possibility of him having any enemy she knew of, she simply mentioned the case of Bimpe’s nude that went all over campus and from her report; the detective discovered the motive to kill on the part of Bimpe, whether directly or indirectly, she became the next lead and the first suspect.

On getting outside the station with the detective, Kike met Alex’s parent, Mr and Mrs Peters, who were terribly in grief and the sight of that tormented her more, she couldn’t wait to leave that place. The detective introduced her to them as Alex’s friend and there was a lot of drama and tears. The parents got an assurance form the detective that he would get to the bottom of the matter and find their son’s killer.

“Kike has been helping us in this investigation; she was the last person to see him before the incident”

Mr Peter responded “My daughter, thank you so much, please make sure you tell them all you know”
“I have told them sir, they will get to the bottom of this” she said, trying to hold back tears.

Alex was the only son of the couple, he had an elder sister who was married and he was supposed to bare the family’s name. His father, a top executive in an oil company, was a very rich man and had so much hope in his 24 year old son who was lying in the mortuary and now all his hopes were shattered.

Although, Kike claimed that she had told the police everything. Obviously, she didn’t. She refused to tell them the fact that she was Alex’s girlfriend for some hours before his demise. When she got to the hostel, Kemi, who had been praying for her, asked how it went. She told her about the questions and how she refused to let them know that they were dating for some hours before his death.

“Kike, don’t you think you should have told the police about the relationship too?”

“Well, I don’t feel that is important and besides, he could have known that we were probably together since he took me out that night”

Kemi wasn’t quite comfortable with everything but she just let it be. Soon Mike was around and he was really interested in the questions the police asked Kike, she didn’t want to respond but he was on her neck and she had to tell him even though she was wondering why he had so much interest in the murder case of a guy he didn’t even like.

Bimpe was a suspect but Detective John insisted on not approaching her yet but she was placed under observation while more questioning continued. Kike hadn’t said it all, she only mentioned what happened when Alex uploaded the picture, though she knew why he did it but refused to tell the police. Frank also had been questioned by the police but it wasn’t more of an interrogation because he was by no means a suspect due to the fact that he had an alibi who testified to the fact that frank was in his room all night but the alibi’s proof wasn’t strong enough. He left frank in his room about approximately one hour before the murder so the police still had their doubts. Everyone in the hostel was a murder suspect, especially people who knew him. The police decided to look for any cult affiliation and there was none. Alex was a party animal but he really didn’t get involved in any cult activity, he was just a rich brat on campus along with his roommate who wasn’t as buoyant as he was.
Whoever committed the murder wanted it to look like an accident, or better still a suicide. There was no finger print of the murderer on his body or anywhere for that matter, so he must have intentionally meant to kill him. But there were some details the police didn’t reveal to Kike because the Detective knew she was still hiding something. Kike was trying to avoid the notion that she had any intimate relationship with Alex so as not to reveal some secrets she knew about Alex and the things he did. However, Kike also remained a lead who was believed to have witnessed this crime and was refusing to speak up. The police felt she was not the murderer because evidences showed that she was on a date with Alex on that night as she claimed but still, detective John had to be sure it was just a friendly date so he visited the eatery they went to that faithful night. It was discovered that Alex proposed to her openly that night and she accepted, they both kissed and someone from the eatery had the video on his phone. There was no way she could deny and right now, she was guilty of giving the police an inaccurate report about her relationship with the deceased and now the police felt she had more things that must have remained unsaid.

It was two weeks into the investigation and the police were acting more in a covert manner due to the nature of the case, the attention of the media had greatly increased and this was due to the lead agent on the case. Just last year, a senator was murdered in cold blood in his apartment and there were just few traces of the murderer, just like this case, the murderer wanted the crime to look like an accident but detective John cracked it and trailed the lead till the murderer, the only son of the senator, was captured clueless that the police were already on his tail. This covert method was entirely detective John’s idea and this case, just like the senator’s left the media in the dark.

Kike was about to leave her room on that Saturday morning, a tutorial was being held in the department in preparation for Tuesday’s test. Kike had to apply a little more makeup, the stress of losing Alex was telling on her and according to Kemi she was already looking Old.

“Kike, you are looking good already, let us be quick about this” Kemi said sounding very impatient.

“Just give me a sec, I just want to clean this part, it feels a little off don’t you think” she responded showing Kemi her left cheek.

“Sha be quick, you look sweet already”

Kike blushed and continued; about ten seconds later they heard a hard knock on the door. The two ladies looked at each other with a look of who can that be? Before they could voice out their expressions, Kemi responded “Who is it?”

“Open up right now, it’s the police” the female voice responded

“What could this be about this time” whispered Kemi to Kike.

Unsure and beginning to feel nervous she whispered back “I don’t know ooh”

Kike got up and walked to the door dragging her feet, as she approached the door, her heartbeat got faster, she was unsure about what this could be about and that was the scary part. She got to the door and opened it, it was detective Maya at the door, and before Kike could say anything she said;

“Miss Kikelomo Adebayo, You are under arrest for Accessory to the murder of Alexander Peters, you have the right to remain silent because anything you say or do will be used against you in the court of law”

Kemi was right behind her and both of them didn’t know what to say, in no time she was taken away and that time, not for questioning, it was a more serious situation. “God, help Kike, why is all this happening”. She just had to keep praying for her friend.
